Here’s an obscure one! Argentum Online was apparently a very popular homegrown Argentinian MMORPG. Its volunteer team are adding new content to the game and run regular events. The game is still playable, with a rogue server operating under the name Archonia. Beyond this however, ArchLord was broadly similar to most other South Korean MMOs and it quickly sank into obscurity from its release until its shutdown in 2014. This game was fairly high profile leading up to its 2006 western release, in part due to its key gimmick whereby one player would be crowned the ruler of the server every four weeks. Project Celeste brings the game back to life with new content and events. No wonder then that the game has been revived by a team of fans. Now that we have a real AoE4 however, there’s a certain charm to AoE Online. This cartoony version of the ground-breaking RTS series probably wasn’t the right direction for the franchise to take at the time of its release. Updated April 17, 2023: Added Elyon, Twin Saga. This article will however only list private server projects for games whose official servers have been sunsetted.ĭisclaimer: The vast majority of these projects are distributing unsanctioned software which could potentially contain malware. There are of course private server projects for games which are still running in an official capacity. Some of these rogue servers, emulators, or private servers are rebuilt from the ground up using only the game’s client-side assets, whereas others are a result of the game’s source code having been made public either officially or via a leak. Yet, their role in preserving MMO history is a vital one, and for that, they should be commended. The teams behind these projects are volunteers – due to legal rights issues they cannot make money from their efforts. Sometimes publishers keep their game’s servers running in maintenance mode, but when this isn’t the case players will take it upon themselves to resurrect the virtual worlds they were turfed out of. ![]() Whether it’s because of licensing issues, a dwindling playerbase, or a shuttered studio, there’s a community out there struggling to come to terms with the loss. ![]() It’s always a sad day whenever an MMO is shut down. ![]() It was kind of him to make his first meeting of Carter sound more dignified than it actually was. This one is told from Annabeth's perspective. This story is told from Carter's perspective, and the two spend pretty much the whole story in combat. There are a few pictures clumped together in the last story. The first two stories have the two boys meet, and then the two girls meet, and the final one brings all four together. The slightly larger and more common style we will refer to here as the "Stylis" - from the paper label typically found on the bottom reading "Stylis Timepiece." The clock mechanism of the Stylis is housed in a cylindrical glass tube which seems to rest on an equally sized wooden framework or cradle. There exist two distinct versions of the New Haven Flip Clock. Two Versions of the New Haven Timepiece (Stylis and Perseus) And by 1939 an advertisement still describes the clock as "modern masterpiece by New Haven that gives you the time accurately and precisely, just like you would speak it." The consensus is that the clocks first appeared in 1937. So basically, what we know about the New Haven "Time Flip" remains limited. Ah well, that was a time before the internet and instant knowledge. This can be seen by an advertisement from that period that describes a flip clock of the day as the first new way to tell time in 10 centuries. Due to this lack of readily available information, even people in the 1960s had little idea of the history of digital clocks. These type of clocks continued on into the 40s, 50s and 60s until overtaken by the flip clocks. These were the cyclometers, the clocks that had digits that rolled on relatively large wheels housed in necessarily bulky cabinets. The limited recorded history results in many being surprised to learn that there were already "digital" clocks in the 1930s when the New Haven flip clocks came on the scene. Today, these details must be pieced together from old advertisements of the day, established horological journals and online sources. No one thought to keep records of the details beyond patents. Recorded information from the makers of antique clocks from the 1930s is scarce or non-existant. ![]() To more appreciate this link to the past we need a little historical background. Anyone who appreciates the clean lines and simplicity of the Cifra 3 and the elegant functionality of the early Copals will clearly see the connection to the New Haven Flip Clocks of the late 1930s. This current popularity and scarcity certainly accounts for the high prices the clocks command at traditional and online auctions.Īfter production of the New Haven Flip Clocks, 30 years would pass before the modern flip clock era began. This apparent lack of popularity in their time, and likely limited production, probably explains the rarity of the New Haven Flip Clock, which today makes them highly collectable and sought after by both traditional clock collectors (horologists) and aficionados of flip clocks (horopalettologists). So perhaps this explains why these clocks did not quite catch on and quickly faded into obscurity. The New Haven flip clocks, while clearly different and unique, were not exactly the prevailing style, and yet did not fit completely in the traditional form either. The designers were in tune with the public's fascination with world travel and streamlined speed. Everything from cars, clocks, and tools were designed with streamlined profiles, and produced with modern materials in keeping with the engineering advances in aviation and train design. In fact, when they first came out between 1937-1939 Art Deco had evolved to what is now called the Streamline Moderne style. Because compared to true Art Deco, these clocks do not quite fit the bill. Perhaps it would be better to say that the New Haven Flip Clocks were, "influenced" by the Art deco movement. Now referred to as the "New Haven Flip Clock," in online circles today this antique wooden flip clock is often described as Art Deco. The New Haven "Time Flip" fit somewhere between the these two categories. Yet, they continued to produce the elegant, traditional clocks of wood, glass and brass. Over the more than one century of its existance, the well known clock company produced many varieties of table, wall and mantle clocks, including elaborate chime clocks, and later, even pocket watches.ĭuring the 1930s masters of the arts, architecture and design were consumed with the Art Deco style, and the New Haven Clock Company produced its share of plastic (Catalin and Bakelite) Art Deco time pieces. The New Haven Clock Company operated out of New Haven, Connecticut from 1853-1960. ![]() It was the 1930s - The era of the Great Depression, when the New Haven Clock Company produced an early version of a true flip clock - the New Haven "Time Flip," "Time at a Glance" clock. With a film of this sort there’s also the challenge of making it scary when – in no small part thanks to the title – most viewers will feel certain that at least one person escapes successfully. “There were some other political scenes which I really liked but the decision was made to trim those down or lose them so we’d have more time to explore the escape itself.” And also we wanted to make the film.” he hesitates, no wanting to use the word ‘commercial’, eventually settling for ‘broader’. We had to make a lot of little cuts to get everything to fit, which meant that certain scenes were lost which meant that other things didn’t work. It depends on things like when people were born. ![]() I was quite keen to try and keep that element because otherwise it can seem a bit too clean cut, like ‘everyone’s against Apartheid, this is the way to dismantle Apartheid, finished,’ and, like no. “There was a lot of scenes that I didn’t want to lose that I had to lose for very good reasons but there’s still one scene where you realise that although all the main characters are against Apartheid there are very divergent views as to what the method of fighting Apartheid should be. “The opening tries to set the context and I like that because first of all it makes the film feel a lot more grounded and it puts it in a very realistic framework, but it’s also for audience members who maybe don’t really understand what Apartheid is,” he says. How did he approach having to convey not only the immediate dangers faced by the characters in the film but also the profound strangeness of living under a system like that? There’s a generation of filmgoers now who grew up after Apartheid ended. I was very, very interested in the book.” Wait there.’ They gave me the book and I got right back.
